Lucky It Wasn't On Us

May 12/99

Venue change for The Henrys' Oasis gig: We're told that the ceiling at the Oasis took a little tumble the other day, and it's taking them awhile to get it back up because there's a big building inspector who keeps standing in the way. So our first gig in Toronto since last September has suddenly been relocated.

This venue change follows the most aggressive marketing campaign The Henrys have undertaken in years, to the extent that we actually went down to Queen Street with posters and a staple gun a few weeks ago and papered the place. That on top of a volley of faxes, emails, phone calls - even Eye magazine is doing an article about us as a prequel to the gig, and we found out 15 minutes before the interview that our little sky had fallen in. Just our luck! Serves us right for breaking away from the tried and true "Zeropromo" approach that's served us well for the past ten years.

Anyway, we've found a new venue. Please tell anyone you know who might innocently trundle off to the Oasis, $5 in hand, that on Wed. May 26th we (Rooke, Billard, Pasmore, Breit) are now holding forth at a really nice space called ROCKIT, 120 Church St. just south of Richmond St. in downtown Toronto.

Also, NXNE is in *June* (not July, as our last newsletter would indicate) and we'll be doing our 40 min. set on Thurs. June 10, 10 pm at the Rex, on Queen just west of University. We just saw a list of performers for the North Sea Jazz Festival in Holland, where we'll be in July. Woof! The lowly Hens, soon to be rubbing shoulders with our close personal friends John Scofield, Ben Harper, Marc Ribot, Bill Frisell, Toots Thielemans, Chick Corea, Ladysmith B.M., The Dirty Dozen, Herbie Hancock, Joe Lovano, Al Green, Al Jarreau, Dr. John, Billy Preston, Cecil Taylor, Elvis Costello, Pat Metheny, Isaac Hayes, Youssou N'Dour, Joe Zawinul, Branf Marsalis, Elvin Jones, BB King, Yusef Lateef, David Sanborn, Gary Burton etc. etc., and also Chuck E. Weiss, subject of an R.L Jones hit and possibly even still in love. Gotta run. Must learn a couple of jazz licks ... Hencorp
