Dr. David Holdsworth is a Professor in the Departments of Surgery and Medical Biophysics in the Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry, at the University of Western Ontario. He is also a Scientist in the Imaging group at the Robarts Research Institute. His research program involves the development and use of CT, MRI, and ultrasound techniques to investigate cerebrovascular disease and musculoskeletal disease. With respect to vascular disease, Dr. Holdsworth has previously been supported as a Career Investigator with the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario, with funding to investigate the use of advanced Doppler ultrasound techniques to characterize diseased blood vessels leading to the brain. He is also supported by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) to develop new x-ray based techniques to diagnose and treat diseased blood vessels within the brain, applicable to both endovascular and surgical therapy.

In 2007 Dr. Holdsworth became the Dr. Sandy Kirkley Chair in Musculoskeletal Research and has shifted the focus of his research to musculoskeletal disease. Musculoskeletal imaging plays a major role in Dr. Holdsworth’s research program, with projects ranging from basic skeletal research to clinical therapy. This program involves investigators who specialize in the areas of osteoporosis, osteoarthritis, and rheumatoid arthritis. Dr. Holdsworth and his team have developed new methods for musculoskeletal disease detection and treatment for both basic pre-clinical and clinical applications. With assistance from collaborators at The University of Western Ontario, and across the country, Dr. Holdsworth has developed new micro-CT techniques that have been applied to a variety of animal models including rabbits, rats and mice. With collaborators Dr. Douglas Naudie and Dr. Cynthia Dunning, he has been funded by CIHR for the next five years to develop new techniques to image the interface between bones and metal implants, and to improve current techniques for radiostereometric analysis following joint replacement.

With respect to technology transfer, Dr. Holdsworth holds several patents related to medical devices.  His first patent was for the design of a computer-controlled pump, which can simulate pulsatile blood-flow waveforms during research studies. More recently, he was one of the founding scientists at Enhanced Vision Systems (EVS), a London-based company that developed micro-computed tomography systems.  EVS was purchased by General Electric Healthcare in 2002, and continues to manufacture micro-CT systems in London.
