I do my best to keep these listings of concerts, gigs, festivals and radio shows up to date, however, they are subject to change. It's best to confirm the dates and times by phone. Jazz is not about flat fives or sharp nines, or metric subdivisions, or substitute chord changes. Jazz is about feeling, communication, honesty, and soul. Jazz is not supposed to boggle the mind. Jazz is meant to enrich the spirit. Jazz can create jubilance. Jazz can induce melancholy. Jazz can energize. Jazz can soothe. Jazz can make you shake your head, clap your hands, and stomp your feet. Jazz can render you spellbound and hypnotized. Jazz can be soft or hard, heavy or light, cool or hot, bright or dark. Jazz is for your heart. Jazz moves you. -Joshua Redman [April,1994 MOODSWING]

  • Nightlife Jazz Tour: David "Fathead" Newman Quintet

David "Fathead" Newman is a jazz legend best known for his work with the late great Ray Charles. In 1954, David began a 12 year association with Ray becoming his star tenor soloist. He has recorded with many of America's greatest jazz artists including Lee Morgan, Kenny Dorham, and Herbie Mann, Aretha Franklin, Aaron Neville as well as on Natalie Cole's Grammy award winning album "Unforgettable".
    CHANGE IN CONCERT:
Jazz saxophonist David Fathead Newman breaks his hip. Jazz stars Curtis Fuller and Marcus Belgrave come to his aid by completing Canadian Tour.
Curtis Fuller is one of the most famous jazz artists of the last 5 decades. He was born in Detroit, Michigan and began playing the trombone at age 16. Curtis has performed and recorded with every major name in jazz including Miles Davis, Elvin Jones, Cannonball Adderley, Bud Powell, Art Blakey, Jimmy Smith, and McCoy Tyner. Curtis is best know for performing on John Coltranes Blue Trane, considered one of most important jazz recordings of all time.
Marcus Belgrave is a true musical Renaissance man. A trumpeter, composer, educator and producer, Marcus has made major contributions to jazz in North America. In addition to co-founding the Jazz Studies Program at the Detroit Metro Arts Complex, Marcus has performed and recorded with an unparalleled variety of musicians including Ray Charles, Ella Fitzgerald, Charles Mingus, Dizzy Gillespie, and Wynton Marsalis. Belgrave, who recently performed in Detroit with Newman, was sad to hear of his friends accident. The two have been friends for years after playing together in the Ray Charles band.

  • The Sunfest/VIA Rail World Music & Dance Series - 2005/06 Season: Eliana Cuevas Latin Jazz Quartet

The Sunfest Committee launches The Sunfest/VIA Rail 2005-2006 World Music & Dance Series with an evening of Latin jazz featuring sensual Venezuelan singer Eliana Cuevas & her Latin Jazz Quintet. Originally from Venezuela, but now based in Toronto, Eliana is a prodigiously talented songwriter and bandleader, as well as, arguably, the finest Latin vocalist in Canada (Check out her splendid new CD, "Ventura"!). Don't miss this return engagement by one of the brightest stars of Fiesta del Sol '03 as she mines choice Venezuelan, Brazilian, Cuban, Peruvian and jazz rhythms.
"Disarming samba jazz? Sexy sultry salsa? Take your pick. Eliana is a major new voice on the Canadian music landscape." - Derek Andrews, world music producer, Toronto
